A Lotl Fun with Axolotls!

I try to have a new book ready in time for the annual Tucson Festival of Books (TFoB) every year. This year, I am releasing a book I’m very excited about. It all started when I noticed the attention axolotls were getting at the booth next to me during the Tucson Reptile Show. Those attractive amphibians were receiving a lot more attention than my mere science-based books!

If You Can’t Beat ‘Em, Join ‘Em

Over the past two years, I’ve been asked repeatedly if I had books on axolotls. I’ve seen axolotl plush toys walk by and even axolotl costumes for Halloween. I’m really hoping this interest continues because, as the saying goes, “if you can’t beat them, join them.”

These fascinating, frilly amphibians needed a book. I asked local teacher, Brother John, if he’d like to write one with me. While he declined a co-author credit, he was happy to help me with the research. So, off I went to write!

Beating the Festival Deadline

Last year, I tried to have my book, Don’t Call Me Poop!, available for TFoB, but I missed it by just two days—the shipment arrived the Tuesday after the festival. This year, I pushed my illustrator, Anderson Atlas, to finish his work by February 1 to ensure a month-long buffer for shipping.

I’m very pleased to announce that Anderson successfully created exquisite, amusing illustrations right on time! The first shipment has been ordered and is due to arrive mid-February, well in advance of the festival.

A Title with a Twist

Selecting titles is always a marketing challenge. I needed something more appealing than just Axolotls. Taking a page from Dr. Seuss, I selected A Lotl About Axolotls. I think it’s catchy and clever—exactly the kind of thing that will attract a passerby’s eye.

Along with the great illustrations, I have to thank Anderson for the back cover blurb. I had come up with something factual but a bit dull; I gave Anderson permission to improve it, and he excelled! I’m starting to think my muse has been hanging out with him lately.
