Vincent van Gecko

A gecko crawls across a window with a cityscape in the background.

The name of a newly discovered lizard has combined science and art in a unique way, resulting in a heavenly name. The lizard’s name is a nod to the famous painting ‘Starry Night’ by Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, known for its bright yellow spots on a blue background.

Starry Gecko

When scientists discovered a new lizard species in India, the male’s coloration and spot pattern immediately brought to mind the iconic ‘Starry Night’ painting. This connection was so strong that they decided to name the species Cnemaspis vangoghi, a testament to the lizard’s striking resemblance to the artwork.

They also suggested the common name “Van Gogh’s starry dwarf gecko.” That’s a fitting name as well, imho. You won’t see these lizards out at night; these geckos are diurnal and active during the day.

This dwarf gecko was just over an inch long. His back was adorned with light blue spots, similar to the famous painting. I can see why they thought of “Starry Night.” Found in Tamil Nadu, India, these lizards live on rocks, trees, and sides of buildings.

I appreciate the creativity in the naming of this colorful lizard. I suspect Van Gogh would be honored. I like to think van Gogh would appreciate the art created by nature.
